JAPANESE GARDENS
Intensive and practice-orientated international seminar
on garden art and garden construction in Japan
14. February - 26. February 2010 ATAMI |
General information concerning the seminar
1. Notes on the seminar term and cultural differences
The term of the seminar is scheduled from the middle to the end of February. Due to very cold weather with snow and ice, this season is a low season for the landscape industry in many countries in Europe and America. However, this season is a very good one to carry out a seminar on Japanese garden art and garden construction here in Atami and it is also a very pleasant season to visit Japan. The temperatures in the hot spring city of Atami will be about 15 degrees Celsius in the daytime and this should be a very comfortable temperature for the variety of practical work during the workshops. You can also enjoy the plum tree blossoms and early flowering cherry tree blossoms throughout the country. Participants of the seminar will have an excellent opportunity to see these flowering trees in Atami and other places to visit.
February is a very good season for visiting temples and dry landscape gardens in Kyoto, too, because Kyoto will be quiet and not overcrowded.
Please also bear in mind that if you are a participant from outside Asia, Japan is a far away country and that the living and working environment may be very different from home. However, by working together, you will be able to adapt very quickly and understand and accept differences.
2. Notes on accommodation facilities
On the first floor of the Seminar House there are pleasant Japanese Tatami-rooms, air-conditioned, which are all reserved for the participants during the seminar. In a traditional Japanese Tatami-room you sleep on a soft and comfortable mattress on the Tatami-floor. Lodging in rooms in this traditional Japanese style will certainly be an unforgettable experience for you and will contribute to your fond memories of your stay in Japan. All rooms are big enough for two to three people. In the morning, all quilts and mattresses will be cleared away and the whole area of the room can be used freely during the daytime. Beds are not used in traditional Japanese Tatami-rooms. However, on request, a simple bed can be provided if with advance notice, but the quantity is limited.
If you like to sleep in a big bed during the whole term of the seminar (13 nights), we recommend you to stay at a hotel nearby (refer to the notes on the application form, page 2).
3. Number of participants
To provide an interesting intensive seminar, which ensures value for all, the number of participants has been limited to 20 persons. This facilitates close personal instruction and guidance by the professional teachers as well as effective learning during all workshops.
To carry out the seminar, the minimum number of participants is 7 persons. In the unlikely event, that we do not have 7 confirmed appli- cations by 1. February 2010, we reserve the right to cancel the seminar. If cancelled, application fee for all persons who have already applied will be fully reimbursed. We recommend you to obtain a travel insurance that will cover cancellation fees for your flight to Japan.
4. Clothes
In the afternoons, during the workshops, we advise you to wear comfortable
clothes, in which you can move easily. We also request you to wear safety
shoes and protective gloves. Simple protection gloves for garden work will
be supplied complimentary on request to everyone during the workshops.
If rain is forecast in the afternoon, workshop units, which are planned
to be outside, maybe changed, as far as possible, with another units. However,
for the case of sudden rainfall etc., we would kindly like to ask you to
bring some waterproof clothes with you.
