BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEMINAR


DAY 1 Sunday, 14. February 2010

Arrival in Atami by 18:00 pm. Registration and check-in at the Seminar House is between 12:00 noon and 18:00 pm. A WELCOME-PARTY is planned for all participants, starting at 18:00 pm. This party is considered to provide an immediate opportunity for all participants and teachers to get acquainted with each other. After the party, the Onsen-bath (hot spring) will be available the whole evening for relaxation.

All seminar days are scheduled as follows: Intensive lecture or seminar in the morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and intensive workshop in the afternoon from 13:00 pm to 18:00 pm. Minor changes in the schedule of the seminar may occur, even on the very day, due to weather conditions, local events etc. If you would like to limit your physical work, please feel free to take part in the afternoon workshops passively, which means you just watch and listen to the instructor or possibly ghelp a littleh. If physical work is a concern, please let us know at the time of application.


DAY 2 Monday, 15. February 2010

The first day of the seminar.

Morning Lecture: Orientation, introduction and outline on the history of Japanese gardens and garden construction. There will also be a brief introduction on the usage of trees and shrubs in Japan.
Afternoon Workshop: How to use plants in a Japanese garden. Typical Japanese plants will be introduced and explained. Planting in the gJapanese wayh will be practiced.


DAY 3 Tuesday, 16. February 2010

Morning Lecture: How to use plants in a Japanese garden. New plant- material will be introduced. Japanese species and cultivars; their proper use and maintenance will be described.
Afternoon Workshop: Maintenance in a Japanese garden. The proper usage of various Japanese tools as well as pruning and clipping techniques will be demonstrated and can be practiced.




DAY 4 Wednesday, 17. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Brief description of the history and development of the Japanese garden from ancient times to modern times. A series of five intensive lectures on Japanese garden history will start with ancient sacred places in shrines, ancient residences gardens and ancient temple gardens.
Afternoon Workshop: Beginning of the construction of a Japanese garden. Japanese stone arrangement (ishigumi). Safety requirements, basic and advanced techniques of stone arrangements that are based on Japanese nature and beauty aesthetics, stone arrangements in dry landscape gardens

and in streams, as well as the construction of a dry waterfall will be demonstrated and can be practiced.


DAY 5 Thursday, 18. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Pond Gardens. During the 400 years lasting Heian period, many beautiful Residence- (shinden zukuri teien) and Paradise gardens (j?do teien) were built under the Fujiwara clan. These gardens had a strong influence on all Japanese garden styles. The style of these gardens and their philosophical and religious background will be analyzed.
Afternoon Workshop: Practicing Japanese stone arrangements (ishigumi) will be continued and some new materials and new techniques will be introduced.


DAY 6 Friday, 19. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Dry landscape gardens (karesansui teien). The history, development and the meaning of dry landscape gardens with their philosophical and religious background will be analyzed and described.
Afternoon Workshop:
Several patterns of the Japanese garden pathway (nobedan), various materials, their characteristics and unique ways of usage will be explained and demonstrated. Japanese garden pathway construction can be practiced.



DAY 7 Saturday, 20. February 2010 and
DAY 8 Sunday, 21. February 2010

Both days are footloose and fancy-free.
On these days you can simply rest, plan your own excursions or you can opt to join the following events:
1. Day trip to Hakone. We will visit a very beautiful moss garden and enjoy drinking green tea (macha). On the way back, we will also visit the famous and interesting MOA art museum. (Transport, guide and en- trance fee are free for all participants of the seminar. No application in advance is required for this event).
2. Day trip to the megalopolis of Tokyo. We will visit some famous sight- seeing spots of the city. Cost for transport will be approx. 30 EURO / 5000 YEN. No application in advance is required for this event.
3. Join the free weekend homestay programme. The organizer would like to offer all participants the unique chance to get insight into authentic Japanese family life by spending a weekend in the circle of a Japanese family. Introduction of a host family, one or two nights lodging, breakfast and some other complimentary meals are free of charge for the partici- ants. Additional costs for transfer, excursions, lunch, dinner, etc. may have to be paid individually. If you want to join this homestay programme, please let us know in advance on the separate form for the homestay programme at the time of your application for the seminar.


DAY 9 Monday, 22. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Tea gardens (chaniwa). Tea gardens are often tidy and narrow, serve as the entrance to tea rooms, have unique space constitutions and with structural elements like chosubachi (stone basin), t?r? (stone lantern), tobiishi (stepping stones), takegaki (bamboo fence), etc. are of utmost interest. The history, development and use of Japanese stone lanterns will be described in detail.
Afternoon Workshop: Assembling and displaying of Japanese stone lanterns and the arrangement of stone basins (tsukubai) will be demonstrated and practiced.


DAY 10 Tuesday, 23. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Daimyo gardens (daimy? teien) and pond-stroll-style gardens (kaiy?shiki teien). These gardens, built during the Edo period, still play an important role for the green space of big cities, particularly in Tokyo.
Afternoon Workshop:
Learn how to plan and construct an earthen wall (dobe). Earthen walls are often used as boundaries or borders in traditional tea gardens and dry landscape gardens.

DAY 11 Wednesday, 24. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Modern Japanese gardens. gTraditional Japan - Modern Japanh: Like in architecture, the garden art of modern Japan shows a great variety of designs with different influences.
Afternoon Workshop: The construction of a Japanese earthen wall will be continued and different designs, techniques and materials for construction will be discussed and compared.


DAY 12 Thursday, 25. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Japanese bamboo fences. The most important bamboo fences (takegaki), their history of development, characteristics and different kind of uses will be explained.
Afternoon Workshop: Tools, which are necessary for the construction of bamboo fences, will be introduced and demonstrated. The most important Japanese bamboo fences will be constructed in small groups.


DAY 13 Friday, 26. February 2010

Morning Lecture: Books on Japanese garden art and garden construction will be introduced. Representatives from Japanese institutions, landscape design and garden construction associates are invited to introduce themselves and their works to the participants of the seminar. Time for Q&A and discussion will be provided.
Afternoon Workshop: Last workshop of the seminar. The construction of important Japanese bamboo fences will be continued and some new advanced techniques for construction introduced. With the planting of trees, shrubs and ground covers, the construction of the Japanese garden will be completed before starting the Sayonara-Party.

As closing event of the seminar there is a SAYONARA-PARTY planned for the evening to say farewell to all participants. We will also kindly ask all teachers to take part in this event to give seminar participants one more chance to talk with the teachers in a relaxed atmosphere.


DAY 14 Saturday, 27. February 2010

The seminar will finish on the evening of Friday, 26. February, but all participants can use their rooms until noon the next day, Saturday, 27. February. Participants, who leave Japan from Narita airport on this day, will be provided a free transport to the airport early in the morning. Participants who want to use their rooms in the Seminar House for an additional night, can book this for a special price (25 EURO person/night in double room or 40 EURO person/night in single room, if available). Participants, who will take part in one of the provided OPTIONAL TOURS or want to stay individually longer in Japan, will leave the Seminar House in the morning. Extending the stay at the Seminar House after the seminar has finished, starting Sunday, 28. February (or arrive earlier in Japan before Sunday, 14. February), may be possible if requested in advance and if there are no other reservations.

There is the opportunity to join one of the provided three OPTIONAL TOURS starting in the morning of Saturday, 27. February. The OPTIONAL TOUR fee is not included in the application fee for the seminar and must be paid individually. Application for the OPTIONAL TOURS should be done at the time of application for the seminar and on the same application form (APPLICATION FORM, PAGE 2). Each OPTIONAL TOUR can, in principal, only be provided with a minimum of four participants. The content of each tour may vary slightly from the tentative program, according to weather conditions and local circumstances.




OPTIONAL TOURS


TOUR 1 : Visit temples and gardens in Tokyo
2 days, 1 night (27. Feb.- 28.Feb.)
The tour fee includes the transport from Atami to the hotel in Tokyo and to all temples and gardens visited during the tour. A one-night stay at a mid-range hotel (two persons in one room) in Tokyo is included in the price.

TOUR 2 : Visit pond and dry landscape gardens in Kyoto
3 days, 2 nights (27. Feb.- 1. March)
Visit some of Kyotofs most famous Japanese gardens. The tour fee includes the return trip from Atami to Kyoto with the Shinkansen superexpress (bullet train) and two nights at a mid-range hotel (two persons in one room) in Kyoto.
APPLICATION FEE: 420 EURO



TOUR 3 : Visit temples and gardens in Kamakura
1 day, 1 night (27. Feb.)
The tour fee includes transport from Atami to Kamakura and one extra night accommodation in the Seminar House in Atami(Single Room).
